Debate continues over Pittsboro Confederate statue

More than 60 people signed up to speak to commissioners at a meeting held at the Chatham County Agriculture and Conference Center in Pittsboro. The meeting was attended by people on both sides of the debate.

Earlier in the day, people were outside waving Confederate flags to show their support of the statue.

At the meeting, a group called Chatham for All presented to commissioners, asking that the statue be returned to the United Daughters of Confederacy. According to the group, the daughters own the statue that sits outside of the courthouse.

But some Chatham County residents argued that the confederate statue is a symbol on white supremacy.

"We have an opportunity here to come to grips with our past and take accountability for the actions of our ancestors. We have an opportunity to learn to stop doing harm. We have an opportunity to be honest about our history," one person said.
