HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C.Editor's Note: Charges against Jeremy Rollins Martin were dismissed and his record expunged in October 2021.

Stefani Martin, an optometrist and mother of two young children, died at an area hospital after falling out of a golf cart. Witnesses said she and her husband had left a party at the clubhouse in the golf course community of 12 Oaks just before the accident.

Jeremy Rollins Martin, 43, was charged with driving while impaired and possession of an open container of alcohol in the incident, which happened on Morning Oaks Drive.

“Jeremy Martin is devastated by the passing of his wife, Stefani who was the love of his life and childhood sweetheart. Jeremy is fully cooperating with the investigation while grieving with his entire family.” Guy Fronstin, a Florida attorney who represents the family, said in a statement.

Investigators are waiting on more toxicology results, she said, and police were back in the neighborhood Monday trying to reconstruct the accident and look for any security camera footage of the incident.

"We have to look at all of the circumstances of the accident, exactly what happened, what led to it and confirm that there was, in fact, drinking or impairment that led to it before we know exactly what appropriate charges are," she said. "We'll wait to get all of the information before we make a final decision."

Residents of 12 Oaks were shaken by Stefani Martin's death.

"It's sad, absolutely horrible," Mary Dyer said.

"We at 12 Oaks are incredibly saddened by the tragedy that has befallen a member of our club family," the operators of the country club said in a statement. "The club is cooperating fully and stands ready to assist the police with anything they need as they gather facts in this ongoing investigation."

Dyer said golf carts are a common sight at 12 Oaks, where residents hold parades of carts on holidays.

"There are golf carts everywhere," she said. "A lot of the people in the neighborhood own golf carts."
