HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — Jim Woodall, the district attorney for Orange and Chatham counties, has announced his retirement, effective at the end of his current term in 2022.

Woodall said he and his wife plan to move aboard their catamaran for a couple years and sail around the Caribbean. When he returns to Orange County, he said, he may work a bit as an attorney.

"He’s a great mentor and quite simply one of the best trial lawyers NC has ever known," Orange County Assistant District Attorney Jeff Nieman tweeted. "Jim, thank you for all you’ve done for this community and state!"

Nieman on Wednesday announced he would run for district attorney to succeed Woodall.

Woodall said he's not endorsing anyone yet.

“I certainly hope the person who succeeds me comes from my office," he said. "Ithink we’ve got several who would make good district attorneys.”

Woodall was appointed to the position in 2005 and elected in 2006.
