CHATHAM COUNTY, N.C. — A bicyclist was injured after being hit by a car during a charity bike ride Sunday morning.

Highway Patrol troopers said a cyclist was making a left turn on Old U.S. Highway 1 near Pea Ridge Road at about 11:25 a.m. when a driver attempted to go around him and struck the bike.

The cyclist was participating in the Raven Rock Ramble, a 100 mile bike ride around Raven Rock State Park through Wake, Harnett, Lee and Chatham Counties. The event raises money for direct patient services at the UNC Kidney Center, according to their website.

The cyclist, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to UNC Hospitals for treatment of a severe head injury, troopers said.

The driver, who was not identified, was charged with reckless driving and passing in a no passing zone.
