Cyclist killed in hit-and-run in Smithfield

A man riding a bike on a dark, two-lane road in Johnston County Thursday was hit and killed. The driver of the car involved left the scene.

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A man riding a bike on a dark, two-lane road in Johnston County Thursday was hit and killed. The driver of the car involved left the scene.

According to the State Highway Patrol, the man, whose identity was not released, was riding with traffic on Braswell Road.

He was not carrying identification or wearing a helmet or any reflective clothing. He was struck from behind by a passing car at about 11 p.m., troopers said.

They believe that the vehicle involved was a blue SUV which may have a broken headlight or other front-end damage.
