FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Cumberland County schools will have 180 fewer positions on the payroll when the new school year begin, Ricky Lopes, district finance officer said Tuesday.

The school system has already eliminated 145 teachers and assistants through attrition.

Lopes said the district will try to limit the number of people who lose their jobs, cutting instead by leaving jobs unfilled and reassigning employees to open positions.

With less money expected from the state, the school system is trying to cut more than $30 million from the budget.
