Cumberland Co. man facing child abuse, other charges against minor

A Cumberland County man is facing several charges after deputies said he beat a minor he was caring for with a belt.

HOPE MILLS, N.C. — A Cumberland County man is facing several charges after deputies said he beat a minor he was caring for with a belt.

On Tuesday, Simon Truitt II, 24, of Hope Mills, was arrested by deputies with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office. He was charged with child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. Deputies said Truitt beat a minor with a belt for peeing on the floor. Deputies said he had a bruised and swollen left hand after the assault.

Truitt and the child are not related.

Truitt was being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center on a $250,000 secure bond. He had a court appearance on Wednesday.

Deputies said the assault happened on Aug. 12. The child went into a seizure at 3 p.m., shortly after the assault. Officials said Truitt waited until 7:11 p.m. to call 911.

The child was life-flighted to UNC Chapel Hill for medical treatment due to ongoing seizures. Officials said some of the injuries the victim sustained were severe head injury, hematoma to the forehead, bruising and swelling to the inside and outside of their left ear, bruising to the left shoulder and shoulder blade, a rib fracture and pattern-shaped marks to the abdomen, back and legs.
