FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Authorities on Friday warned residents that scam artists are operating in the Fayetteville area, representing themselves as fundraisers for the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

A group of people have been soliciting donations under the guise of purchasing equipment for the sheriff's office K-9 unit, Sheriff Earl "Moose" Butler said.

"We have not and will not at anytime approach the public asking for money to support salaries or purchase equipment for this office," Butler said in a statement.

The Fayetteville Police Department also denied having a fundraiser to support its police dog unit, Butler said.

Anyone who is approached in the scam is urged to ask the people for identification and to call the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office at 910-323-1500.
