SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Wildfires sparked by dry, windy conditions popped up in Johnston and Lee counties Friday afternoon. Brian Haines, spokesman for the state Division of Forestry, said crews were able to extinguish the fires.

In Sanford a fire covered about 10 acres of pasture, Haines said.

Along Devils Track Road, a larger fire, estimated at 85 acres, briefly threatened some homes. Crews established a perimeter and were able to contain the blaze.

Haines said firefighters will continue to monitor the area for hot spots.
