CREEDMOOR, N.C. — A middle school in Granville County lost power for several hours Monday on the first day in-person classes resumed for many students in the district.

A spokesperson said Hawley Middle School in Creedmoor lost power after a nearby crash took out a power line. The crash happened before the school day began, although school buses were already in route. Although power was restored by 9:45 a.m., some parents decided to keep their children at home,

No other schools in the area are affected.

A middle school in Granville County lost power Monday on the first day in-person classes were set to resume for many students in the district.

In Granville County, grades 1-12 returned to socially distanced, in-person learning Monday. Pre-K and kindergarten students returned on Sept. 28.

The district is operating under Plan B, with smaller groups of students attending school on alternating days of the week. Students learn from home when they are not in classrooms.

Granville County Superintendent Alisa McLean posted a YouTube video explaining what the new school day will look like.

The changes include a mask mandate and enforced social distancing. Students will be spaced 6 feet apart at all times, and breakfasts and lunches will be served in classrooms.

Students can remove their masks to eat and drink, and during physical activity, but must remain socially distant.

School buses, classrooms and common areas will be disinfected frequently.

Kindergarten students in Johnston County will also return to in-person learning on Monday. The school board voted unanimously last month on a phased reopening plan. Other students will gradually return to the classroom throughout the month.
