Durham, N.C. — One person was killed Thursday in a crash on the Durham Freeway near Cornwallis Road, authorities said.
A tractor-trailer was southbound on the highway when it rear-ended a pickup truck, and both vehicles pulled off onto the left shoulder, authorities said. Minutes later, another southbound pickup ran off the side of the road and hit the tractor-trailer from behind before coming back onto the highway and getting hit by two other southbound vehicles, authorities said.
Edward Lee Cook, 45, of Durham, the driver of the second pickup, was killed.
No charges were filed in the case.
All southbound lanes were closed for a while as State Highway Patrol troopers investigated the crash and cleared away the wreckage.
