RALEIGH, N.C. — A Raleigh couple crashed their car while rushing their dog to an emergency vet hospital early Saturday.

They crashed into a pole at the intersection of Tryon Road and South Wilmington Street around 4:30 a.m.

The dog had eaten chocolate, which can cause seizures and heart attacks in canines.

A veterinarian arrived at the scene, but the dog had died from the chocolate.

The couple were not injured.

Traffic backups were reported as crews worked to fix the pole.
