RALEIGH, N.C. — During a listening session at the White House on Wednesday afternoon, President Donald Trump said that the time for change, when it comes to gun laws, is now.

"We're going to do strong background checks. We're going to work on getting the age up to 21 instead of 18," he said. "We're getting rid of the bump stocks, and we're going to focus very strongly on mental health."

Those changes could impact how guns are sold in North Carolina.

State law, like federal statute, allows 18-year-olds to legally buy rifles, shotguns and an assortment of semi-automatic weapons.

"I absolutely believe in this country if you are 18 years of age, you should not be able to buy a rifle, and I will support a law that takes that right away," said Republican U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida.

Sentiment for that kind of legal and cultural change is growing in the wake of a 19-year-old who opened fire in a Florida high school last week and killed 17 people. It is unclear if Trump supports raising the age for all long guns or just semi-automatic ones, however.

"We do need some type of gun control reform," said Broward County (Fla.) Sheriff Scott Israel. "Eighteen-year-olds should never have a rifle."

A National Rifle Association spokeswoman disagrees.

"It's not the position of the NRA because I think, if we are asking young men and women to go serve our country, then they should also be able to have a firearm," said Dana Loesch.

In North Carolina, buyers must be 21 to purchase handguns from licensed dealers, but there are ways around the law. Anyone who is 18 years old can get a pistol permit, so they can legally own handguns bought from private party sales or those passed down from family and friends.
