RALEIGH, N.C. — Is there any better way to celebrate The Fourth than being outside, eating a hot dog or veggie dog? If you went to the store for your 4th of July celebration and had some sticker shock you’re not alone.

From gas to fireworks and food.

Celebrating the fourth is more expensive, so much so that many are focusing on inexpensive traditions instead.

Ross Turnmire and his sons spent the day fishing at Lake Raleigh, remembering that the best things are still free.

"It’s nice to be able to come out here where the trees are where the lake is and get away from the normal hustle and bustle," said Turnmire. "The weathers is nice, the boys are enjoying being out and about.

Even a family cookout for 10 will cost about $70 bucks this year. $10 more than last year.

The retail price for two pounds of ground beef increased by 36%, while the average price of two pounds of chicken breasts increased 33%. The price of three pounds of center cut pork chops increased 31%.

Lemonade, potato salad, and hamburger buns cost more too.

"Everything is more expensive. It’s definitely driving prices, inflation is, but that’s okay we are just enjoying being out and about," said Turnmire.

A WalletHub survey found two-thirds of Americans surveyed said they plan to spend less money this 4th of July compared to last year, and 57% said inflation is affecting their holiday plans.

Inflation is up 8.6% overall. There have been efforts to help curb inflation like raising interest.
