SATURDAY, NUMBERS WERE THE SECOND HIGHEST. RIGHT NOW NORTH CAROLINA HAS MORE THAN 44,000 CASES CONFIRMED. WHERE DO THINGS STAND FOR TESTING ? THE STATE'S CAPACITY TO TEST MORE CONTINUES TO INCREASE. THE DAILY NUMBER IS UP. THE STATE CONTINUES TO LOOK AT THE PERCENTAGE OF TESTS THAT ARE POSITIVE. AS OF RIGHT NOW, WE ARE AT 9%. THE NUMBER HAS FLUCUATED BETWEEN 8% AND 10% SINCE MAY. MANY OF THE PEOPLE TESTING POSITIVE HAVE SYMPTOMS SERIOUS ENOUGH TO END UP IN THE HOSPITAL. FRIDAY 760 PEOPLE WERE BEING TREATED. AND 800 PEOPLE ARE BEING CLOSELY MONITORED BY DOCTORS TODAY. NOT ALL HOSPITALS IN THE AREA ARE REPORTING THESE NUMBERS. THE STATE WILL HAVE AN UPDATE ON ALL OF THE NUMBERS TODAY AT NOON. COUNT ON WRAL TO BRING YOU THAT INFORMATION ON OUR NEW NEWSCAST. I THINK YOU WERE RIGHT TO HIGHLIGHT THE STATISTICS OF HOSPITALIZATIONS. SOME OF THEM ARE MORE SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE WE ARE BETTER AT TESTING AND FINDING MINIMALLY SYMPTOMATIC PEOPLE. BUT THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN THE HOSPITAL CONTINUES TO RISE. I THINK SATURDAY WAS THE HIGHEST WE HAVE HAD. WE HAVE TO TURN THAT SHIP AROUND. LET'S BE HONEST. &gt;&gt; WHAT DO YOU THINK IS BEHIND THE SURGE? &gt;&gt; I DON'T KNOW THAT IT IS EASY TO PIN IT ON ONE THING. I THINK IF YOU LOOK AT THE GRAPH OF HOSPITAL VISITS, IT HAS BEEN A STEADY INCREASE SINCE THE EARLY PART OF MAY. WE HAVE DEFINITELY TRIED TO REOPEN. WE DEFINITELY BECOME A LITTLE BATTLE FATIGUED ABOUT STAYING CAMPED UP IN OUR HOUSE. HONESTLY PEOPLE FORGET, BECAUSE MOST OF US DON'T SEE THE BAD OUTCOMES OF THIS. WE DON'T SPEND OUR DAYS IN A HOSPITAL WORKING IN AN ICU. WE WERE NEVER LIKE NEW YORK WITH EVERYONE SEEING PEOPLE AROUND THEM BECOME SICK. I THINK IF YOU ARE NOT WITNESSING WHAT TAKES PLACE WITH SOMEONE WHO LANDS IN A HOSPITAL, GASPING FOR AIR, YOU CAN FORGET WHAT THIS IS LIKE. EVERYONE IS KEEN TO GET BACK TO BUSINESS SO TO SPEAK. IT IS A BIT OF FATIGUE TO BE HONEST. SOCIAL DISTANCING AND MASKING, THERE IS FATIGUE. WE ARE GETTING BACK TO BIG GROUPS AND THE VIRUS WOULD LOVE THAT. &gt;&gt; OVER THE WEEKEND, I SAW SO MANY PEOPLE WITHOUT MASKS, SO MANY PEOPLE NOT FOLLOWING SOCIAL DISTANCING. ONE OF THE METRICS YOU TOLD ME IS MOST IMPORTANT IS HOSPITALIZATIONS. TELL US WHY THAT IS SOMETHING THAT YOU ARE MONITORING SO CLOSELY RIGHT NOW. &gt;&gt; IT IS A REALLY HARD STATISTIC. NOT ONLY DOES IT IMPACT HOSPITALS IN TERMS OF ABILITY TO DELIVER GOOD CARE FOR EVERYTHING ELSE, BUT IT IS UNBIASSED IN THE WAY YOU MEASURE IT. IF I RUN 1,000 EXTRA TESTS WHERE MAY HAVE AN EXTRA 1,000 PATIENTS BUT THEY WERE SITTING THERE AND I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT IT. THE HOSPITALIZATIONS IS A MORE TRUE MEASURE. AS THAT GOES UP, IT IS INEVITABLE THAT MORE PEOPLE ARE INFECTED. THE OTHER NUMBERS ARE EASIER TO STATISTICALLY MAKE THEM LOOK LIKE IT. YOU CAN'T FAKE 820 PEOPLE IN HOSPITAL BEDS. THEY ARE THERE BECAUSE THEY ARE SICK. &gt;&gt; GOVERNOR COOPER SAID ON FRIDAY VERY PLAINLY HE HAS NOT DECIDED ON WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITH PHASE 2.5 OR PHASE 3. SEEING THESE METRICS, SEEING THE HIGH NUMBER OF CASES, DESPITE MORE TESTING, DO YOU THINK WE SHOULD MOVE INTO THESE NEXT PHASES OR SLOW IT DOWN A BIT? &gt;&gt; I THINK HE IS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT TO BE CAUTIOUS. WE CAN BE DATA DRIVEN AS WE WANT TO BE BUT IF WE DON'T ACT ON WHAT IT SHOWS, WHAT ARE WE DOING? WE ARE STICKING OUR HEADS IN THE SAND. I THINK HE IS RIGHT TO SORT OF PUT A LITTLE BRAKE ON THAT AND SAY HEY, WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO DIFFERENTLY AS WE CONTINUE TO TRY AND REOPEN. I THINK THAT'S FAIR. IF HE ISNER TAINING THE IDEA OF A PAUSE WHERE WE ASSESS WHAT WE HAVE NOT GOTTEN RIGHT, I THINK THAT IS DATA DRIVEN AND SOUNDS APPROPRIATE. WE DON'T HAVE OUR CONTACT TRACING DONE RIGHT YET. WE ARE TRYING TO INCREASE TESTING. WE NEED TO KEEP REITERATING TO PEOPLE TO KEEP DISTANCE AND WEAR MASKS. Hello, everyone. I'm meteorologist, Mike Mays in the WRL severe weather center. With your forecast update for this Friday night, we have about a 20% chance of a shower through the evening and for most of the night, so don't be surprised if you're out for dinner and you run into an isolated shower. That's the possibility toward daybreak. As you can see, rain, chances do increase just a bit. Now for the day tomorrow, it will be a warm one but not hot. Like today, we had 90 out at RDU lunch tomorrow at 75. Our forecast high 82 partly to mostly cloudy skies. It's the abundant amount of cloud cover that should reduce the heat. Now, if we tend to have a little bit more sunshine, it could slip past that. 82 but it shouldn't be as hot as what we had today. And tomorrow's hit and miss showers and storms. 30 to 40% chance in the morning, 40 to 50% in the afternoon, 60% actually as we head into tomorrow night. So we have needed rain ahead. It's been very dry over the past month or so. There is rain in the forecast, it's not going to be a washout weekend. There will be hit and miss showers and storms and the nature of the way rain is this time of year and into the summer, it's more hit and miss. So you may see rain at your house, but your neighbor a mile down the road may not see anything. So we have 50% chance of rain tomorrow. That doesn't mean you're going to see rain. At least there's a 50% chance there is going to be rain in your neighborhood. 60% Saturday night, 50% on Sunday, I think Monday is going to be the day. We have the greatest likelihood, especially Monday night with a 70% chance for showers and storms down to 30 on Tuesday, 40% chance for showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday. So here is the rainfall potential at least through Tuesday, both the American model and the European model show about a three quarter inch of rainfall potential during Saturday, Sunday, Monday and through Tuesday night at 11 o'clock. So it's a pretty good chance that we'll have some decent rain. So tomorrow, anywhere from 82 at Rocky Mountain, Raleigh, 84 in Fayetteville, cooler at Boone 67 there, 81 at Wilmington for Sunday, we expect our highs to be in the low eighties locally still in the sixties at Boone, about 80 in Asheville, 81 at Wilmington, 73 at NAGS head and then on Monday, our highs will be in the low to mid eighties. Still showers and storms in the area. So our forecast tonight isolated a shower this evening, light showers and a possible storm at daybreak lows will be in the low to mid sixties. Our highs tomorrow will be in the eighties. Although our northern counties may stay in the seventies again. Showers and storms are in the forecast, some in the morning, some in the afternoon as well. Seven day forecast, check it out over the next four days. We stay in the eighties. But by the time we get to Wednesday and Thursday, we could be back in the nineties. Could be quite toasty on Wednesday with a high at 94. That's our forecast update for this Friday night. Have a wonderful weekend. I'll see you on Monday.

Protesters marched around UNC on Friday morning. Their nearly-two mile loop stopped traffic and interrupted students daily activities.

Barricades like these are usually put up during moments of unrest during protests, but they were unnecessary today. As a group of pro Palestinian protesters made their way through campus peacefully albeit loudly to get their message carrying signs of support for the Palestinian people impacted by the Israel Hamas war. Roughly 100 protesters made their way through unc's campus. They want the university to pull out any investments in Israeli businesses. It's unknown if us $5.2 billion endowment invests in any companies associated with Israel. It's what led to unrest on UN CS campus. Earlier this week, law enforcement and protesters clashed at an encampment. We're not here to destroy anything. We're here to get a message out. We're here to pressure people. We're here to make a change. Eri Mitchell is yet to see happen, but he feels this group is making an impact. I believe that seeing Palestinian Children holding up signs saying please continue is a green light for us to keep showing solidarity, to keep showing that we're out here. Friday's protests brought the group through U C's campus, stopping traffic and peacefully interrupting daily activities for students taking graduation photos near the old well, which did draw some support from those passing by. You hear other cars honking? Of course not. I do think that we're at some inflection point. This UN C student wanted to remain anonymous. He's at odds internally battling against the school. He'll get a diploma from in a couple of years. I don't know. I think I'm proud to be a student here. I think the students are showing up, but I can't say that I'm proud, I'm definitely not proud of UN C and the system and what they're doing and they say they won't stop until they see change.
