RALEIGH, N.C. — A courtroom at the Wake County Courthouse will reopen Wednesday morning. It was closed and cleaned Tuesday after a defendant showed up for court with COVID-19.

Chief District Court Judge Robert Rader said cases were being heard in Courtroom 304 Tuesday morning, with those in attendance wearing masks and keeping their social distance, when a defendant showed up for a hearing and said he had tested positive for the virus on Monday.

The defendant told the prosecutor and his probation officer that he had felt ill for days before getting tested. The prosecutor consulted with the judge, who, along with Rader, decided to clear the courtroom.

Cases scheduled for Tuesday were continued. Courtroom 304 will be cleaned Tuesday night and court will resume at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Court modifications have been in place since March because of the coronavirus pandemic.
