HOSPITALS ACROSS THE UNITED STATES HAVE SEEN A BIG DROP IN STROKE PATIENTS SINCE THE COVID- 19 PANDEMIC BEGAN. THAT MAY NOT BE A GOOD THING BECAUSE IT COULD BE A SIGN THAT PEOPLE ARE NEGLECTING TO GET THAT CARE. TO TELL US ABOUT STROKES AND COVID-19, WE ARE JOINED BY DR. CLINTON RIGHT, THE DIRECTOR OF THE DIVISION OF CLINICAL RESEARCH FOR THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS AND STROKE AT NIH. GOOD MORNING TO YOU, DR. WRIGHT. FEMA GOOD MORNING. >> SO GLAD YOU ARE WITH US THIS MORNING. I DID WANT TO DISTINGUISH OFF THE TOP HERE BETWEEN A DROP IN STROKE PATIENTS THAT IS CORONAVIRUS RELATED VERSUS NOT. WHO IS NOT COMING INTO GET CARE AT THIS TIME? >> WELL, THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION. WE DON'T REALLY KNOW IF IT IS AFFECTING A PARTICULAR GROUP OF STROKE PATIENTS. WHAT WE DO KNOW IS THAT ABOUT A THIRD LESS STROKE PATIENTS ARE COMING INTO THE HOSPITAL SEEKING STROKE CARE, AND THAT'S A BIG PROBLEM BECAUSE AS MANY PEOPLE RECOGNIZE, TIME IS GRAVE. THE QUICKER YOU GET INTO THE HOSPITAL, THE MORE LIKELY YOU COULD RECEIVE LIFE-SAVING TREATMENT, WHETHER THAT BE A CLOTBUSTING DRUG OR A DEVICE TO PULL THE CLOCK OUT, IN CERTAIN CASES, A LARGE VESSEL STROKE. WE ARE CONCERNED ABOUT THE REDUCTION IN PEOPLE COMING IN. >> THAT'S THEN TALK ABOUT THE SIGNS OF STROKE. I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT THAT WE GET THAT INFORMATION TO PEOPLE ABOUT WHAT THEY SHOULD BE LOOKING FOR IN THEIR BODIES. >> IT STROKE AWARENESS MONTH, AND WE WANT EVERYONE TO BE AWARE OF THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF STROKE. SO WE USUALLY THINK IN TERMS OF VERY SIMPLE ACRONYM TO REMEMBER, WHICH IS FAST. THE FAST ACRONYM STANDS FOR FACE. SO IF YOUR FACE IS DROOPY ON ONE SIDE, THAT IS A SIGN OF STROKE. THE A STANDS FOR ARM. SO YOU COULD HAVE SOMEONE LITERALLY LIFT UP THEIR ARMS AND IF ONE ARM IS NOT ABLE TO BE LIFTED UP ALL THE WAY, THAT MIGHT SUGGEST THAT SOMEONE IS HAVING A STROKE . AS STANDS FOR SLURRED, SO IF YOU HAVE SLURRED SPEECH OR YOU HAVE TROUBLE TALKING OR TROUBLE UNDERSTANDING WHAT SOMEONE IS SAYING, THAT COULD BE A SIGN OF STROKE. ALL OF THESE ARE SUDDEN SYMPTOMS THAT COME ON VERY SUDDENLY, AND THEN THERE IS OTHERS LIKE TROUBLE WALKING, BALANCE PROBLEMS, SUDDEN LOSS OF VISION IN ONE EYE. THESE ARE ALL THINGS WE WANT PEOPLE TO RECOGNIZE AND THEN CALL 911. AS I SAID, GETTING IN QUICKLY IS IMPORTANT. >> WHY DO YOU THINK PEOPLE ARE NOT COMING IN? DO YOU THINK PEOPLE ARE POTENTIALLY WORRIED ABOUT CONTRACTING COVID-19. >> WE FEEL THERE IS A LOT OF FEAR OUT THERE AND WE DON'T HAVE A LOT OF EVIDENCE THAT GOING TO THE HOSPITAL INCREASES THE RISK OF CATCHING THE VIRUS FROM OTHERS. YOU KNOW, THE PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT THAT'S BEEN PUT IN PLACE AT HEALTHCARE FACILITIES IS FELT TO BE ADEQUATE TO PREVENT NOT ONLY HEALTHCARE WORKERS FROM GETTING IT BUT ALSO PATIENTS WHO ARE VISITING THE HOSPITAL. WE REALLY DON'T WANT THAT TO BE A DETERRENT. >> OKAY. WE ONLY HAVE A FEW SECONDS. I REALLY DID WANT TO GET TO THE IMPORTANT RESEARCH THAT YOU ALL ARE DOING TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE FACT THAT COVID-19, A COMPLICATION OF IT IS STROKE AND ALSO SOME NEUROLOGICAL ISSUES. WHAT ARE YOU SEEING IN TERMS OF THAT AT THIS TIME? >> WELL, WE ARE REALLY INVESTING HEAVILY TO TRY TO UNDERSTAND THOSE LINKS AND GET THAT RESEARCH DONE, BECAUSE IT IS VERY EARLY. THERE ARE REPORTS THAT THERE IS AN INCREASE IN CLOTTING THAT HAPPENS IN COVID-19 INFECTION THAT MAY PREDISPOSE PEOPLE TO HAVE STROKES, EVEN PEOPLE THAT DON'T HAVE TRADITIONAL STROKE RISK FACTORS LIKE HYPERTENSION, DIABETES, OBESITY, AND ALL OF THAT, WHICH WE WANT PEOPLE TO KEEP UNDER CONTROL. THERE IS ALSO EVIDENCE THE VIRUS MAY INFECT THE BRAIN AND THE NERVOUS SYSTEM AND WE TRY TO UNDERSTAND THOSE LINKS. >> WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING THAT RESEARCH. DR. I'm meteorologist, Kat Campbell in the wr a severe weather center. No more thirties in the forecast and we don't have a frost threat tonight so you can leave your plants be, temperatures are falling into the upper forties to lower fifties overnight. We've got a different wind direction and some more clouds that will fill in by daybreak tomorrow at the bus stop, it'll be in the low to mid fifties for most of the kids out there. So a mild start, but you may want to send your kids to school with an umbrella because by the time they head home, some of us are going to be dealing with a chance for rain during the afternoon. It's all due to this cold front. Approaching from the northwest. There's not a lot of moisture for the front to work with, but just enough and enough lift to squeeze out some rain. I think that rain chances would start in our northwestern counties around 11 a.m. through lunchtime. And then that chance is really closer to, to three o'clock here in the triangle. But that might be when the kids are heading home as we get toward 456. It would be south and east of the triangle with the best chance for rain. Rocky Mount, Southern Pines. I'm thinking you'll be in that 3 to 5 p.m. time frame for rain. It's not going to be a very heavy rain. There is a small chance of a thunderstorm embedded, but most of us will just see some pretty light rain. In fact, models are showing less than 5/100 of an inch of rain. So very tiny rainfall amounts from this event. We do have the Durham Bulls in town this week. And luckily the forecast looks good for all of their home games. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We've just got wonderful baseball weather. Temperatures will be near 70 for the first pitches and the rain should be over in Durham, the triangle by the time we get to dinner time for tomorrow evening, which means it's likely to be a dry game for us. Your seven day forecast show, some big changes are on the way though. We've got 74 for the high Wednesday with chance for rain Thursday just 72. So a small dip in our high temperatures more noticeable at night though we fall into the upper forties Thursday night to Friday morning, we're going with 47 as the low Friday morning around the triangle. And then once we get to the weekend temperatures begin to rebound. However, that will come with an increasing cloud cover mostly cloudy Saturday and Sunday. But back in the eighties by Sunday and even warmer next week, highs could climb near 90 a week from today.
