RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina saw the biggest spike yet in unemployment claims Friday as the state system opened to self-employed people and independent contractors not usually eligible for claims.

Nearly 54,500 claims were filed Friday, according to the NC Division of Employment Security. Saturday saw another 32,500 claims.

Monday's numbers were back down to what the system has become used to since a phased-in shutdown of the state's economy began in mid March: nearly 22,000 claims filed.

Altogether DES says 875,632 unemployment claims have been filed in North Carolina since March 15.

That's roughly 17 percent of the state's civilian work force.
