LOUISBURG, N.C. — Three more residents of Louisburg Nursing Center have died of coronavirus-related complications, bringing the total at the facility to 14. Nine other residents remain hospitalized.

Overall, 53 of the 61 residents in Louisburg Nursing Center have tested positive for the virus, as have 12 staff members. Louisburg Nursing Center has, by far, the highest death toll from the virus of any assisted living center in central North Carolina.

"Very sad because nobody was there to hold his hand we didn’t get to say goodbye we didn’t get to see him," said Fonda Burke, whose father, Rex Weathersby, died from COVID-19 at the nursing home. He was a Vietnam veteran who, his daughter said, died alone from the virus.

"He did get the flag but we didn’t get to hear Taps, we didn’t get the 21-gun salute or any of that because of the virus," Burke said.

Burke said, after miscommunication about his test results with the facility, he died on April 18, jut four days after testing positive for coronavirus.

Susan Peoples knows multiple people inside who tested positive and others who have lost their lives. She wants everyone to take this seriously.

"It can attack you so quickly, and this is a very serious pandemic," Peoples said.

While there are still questions as to what's being done to mitigate the spread at the nursing home, nearby residents are praying for this small town on the outside and the heroes on the inside.

"They are our heroes," Peoples said. "We want them to hear that loud and clear."
