RALEIGH, N.C. — Shaw University is the latest to cancel the annual activities that surround homecoming. The gathering of thousands of alumni, students and friends of the university on campus and in Raleigh during a pandemic creates too much risk, the university said.
Last week, North Carolina A&T, Winston-Salem State University and Fayetteville State University announced similar cancelations. In each case, the homecoming football game remained on the schedule, although it is expected that fans would be limited.

"Choosing to forego a beloved tradition was difficult, and while we are disappointed, we recognize that this is absolutely the right thing to do for all involved,” said Dr. Paulette Dillard, president of Shaw University.
