FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Dozens of cars lined up outside the Crown Complex before 6 a.m. on Thursday for a one-of-a-kind meal giveaway.

To help struggling Cumberland County families during the coronavirus pandemic, Second Harvest Food Bank of Southeast North Carolina organized a drive-thru food distribution in the parking lot of the Crown Complex at 10 a.m.

25,000 free meals will be given out to 1,200 residents, organizers say. Each meal will be enough food for a family for a week and includes items such as:

  • 5 pound bag of chicken breast
  • Produce box with cabbage, sweet potatoes, bananas, and other greens
  • 5 pound bags of apples and oranges

Only two households are served per each car. The bank says to line up early -- it's first come, first serve.

Organizers ask for people driving to use the Owen Drive Entrance.

Cumberland County has 330 cases of coronavirus as of Wednesday morning. Eight people have died from the virus.
