The Triangle-area transit agencies GoTriangle, GoRaleigh, GoDurham and GoCary on Monday announced that bus rides would remain free for at least another year, through June 30, 2022.

Financial assistance from the federal government has allowed the transit agencies to run without depending on rider fares through the pandemic.  Additional aid from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES Act), passed in March, allows the transit agencies to extend fare-free rides for another year.

“The transit providers in our area are suspending all fares for the next year to ensure that our residents can access jobs, health care, education and other opportunities regardless of their financial situation while maintaining their safety as well as that of our operators,” said Michael Parker, chairman of the GoTriangle Board of Trustees.

Riders are required to wear a face covering, in line with federal guidance for mass transit, and most buses ask riders to board through the back door to maintain social distance from the driver.
