HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — Hillsborough police shut down a block party on Riddle Avenue Sunday night and sent dozens of people home. They planned to file a criminal charge against the host, Torcee Mitchell, 32, of 585 Riddle Ave.

Police were first called to the party around 6:30 p.m. They asked guests to disperse. When they returned a little more than an hour later, the same amount of people and vehicles were still present, prompting officers to shut down the gathering and remain on scene for the rest of the evening.

Under the terms of Gov. Roy Cooper's executive order asking North Carolinians to stay at home, gatherings of 10 or more are banned, and people are asked to remain 6 feet apart. People are only allowed to leave their homes to work at or visit an "essential" business, to exercise outdoors while maintaining social distance, or to help a family member.
In Hillsborough, police asked that anyone aware of violations of the stay-at-home order call 919-296-9500 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or file a report online.
