so I I want to talk a little bit about schools. Uh, you're ah releases. Pretty clear, I think. But I just kind of want to drill down to the kind of the nut of it. Here. The governor permits parents to choose full remote learning. He must also permit parents to choose full in person learning. So you don't necessarily want to require schools to be open for in person instruction on Lee. But you do want all schools in the state to offer full on in person only to any parents that want it. Is that correct? So I think if if parents want their Children to be in school full time, the school should offer that option to them. And I think Governor has foreclosed that hey has offered parents the option of full remote. Um, and it looks like he's offered some systems the option of going entire promote a Sfar assist systems. They're concerned, but the the individual parents, you've got situations where parents may have some particular difficulties. As far as their ability to take two days off a week, TB with their Children or Teoh make childcare arrangements. The other thing is there are a number of parents who know that for their child being in school, uh, in front of a teacher is the best learning environment for that child. I think there's a real concern on the part of a lot of people, and I think there should be a real concern on the part of of the of the governor and the education establishment on the achievement gaps that are going to be created or exacerbated, I think more likely exacerbated as a result of this, because we know that Children from higher income families tend not to lose. Uh, uh, academic achievement results over the summer. Yet Children from lower income environments 10 Teoh to fall behind some of the summer and what we're looking at, this situation that is likely to make that even worse than it has been in the past. I mean, we're probably we've got some circumstances where some some kids will not have been in in a classroom from March of this year to maybe September, August or September of 2021. And for a child that is already in the at risk category A. I don't know how we find ways for that child to make that up and not offering the option of a child being in the classroom during during this time period. It seems to me it just makes that situation that much worse. Don't know that anybody disputes that and that it's a bad situation all around. But how do you weigh that against the risk not only to Children, which is, you know, we're told is pretty rare. But to the possibility that schools just become transmission hubs, Well, I don't know that, Uh, as a matter of degree, it's gonna be that much different than if you have the Children come in every two days or every third day. A supposed to some of the Children coming every day and some of the Children coming every second or third day. I mean, if if you're practicing the social distancing and doing all the other things just strikes me that that that's not a higher risk situation. How do you practice social distancing, though, if you have 30 kids in a classroom, well, but, you know, let's let's take Wake County, for example. I think we already know that in Wake County, what is about 20% of the parents have already opted or 20% of kids already opted for full distance learning. Um, I just believe that with giving parents more control over those kinds of decisions, the situation will be worked out and can be worked out. I don't I don't think you're talking about having 30 kids in a classroom. I think you're more likely to see a situation where almost days you may have 15 kids in the classroom, even with the option of some parents being able to to choose full in class learning. And would you, like parents toe have that option of full in class learning for all grade levels? Or is it different for high school? And the reason I ask it so I think, you know, is the research seems to indicate that while young Children are less likely to transmit this thing, teenagers are more likely than a young child, at least. Yeah, well, the other thing is, uh, and I think the option will be available for all. But if if it's determined that from space standpoint or for other reasons, you can only do it for 70% of the students or something like that Thea earlier grades would be the Maury important because of the importance of in classroom learning for kids in elementary school in particular, is that much more important than it is necessarily for high school students? All right, if we could widen the lens on this, some in your party have got criticism kind of downplaying Kobe. 19. How serious of a public health crisis do you? Do you personally consider this to be A. I think it depends on it. It's a serious public health crisis, but the level of concern for individuals it really is different, depending on what that individual's personal circumstances are. So if if you're someone 18 or under, chances are, even if you contract the disease, the likelihood of you having a life altering event a za result of that is slim. Extremely slam. Then if you go from 18 or 19 Teoh, maybe the mid thirties or forties, unless you have some kind of pre existing health conditions. Diabetes have blood pressure, some sort of breathing problems, those sorts of things, the likelihood of of you having a serious adverse reaction to the disease from everything that I've read seems to be fairly slight. But if you're if you're in your fifties or sixties and you have a health condition or if you in your 60 seventies eighties on and whether or not you have a health condition, you probably more risk. And I think it is more appropriate for us to understand the risk level that individuals have let adults make decisions about their personal hell and let adults make decisions about the health of their Children on have certain basic rules out there. That and information for individuals that people can can make choices. We've way got a serious health problem with Kobe. 19 on these, any question about that. But I think we have failed to address that problem in a way that really targets the the MAWR serious adverse consequences. And we've allowed sort of blanket solutions to be applied in those blanket solutions I believe have missed the mark in in probably a majority of situation. Do you favor the mask requirement? I think it's appropriate in certain circumstances. Toe wear a mask on, and I think if if individuals feel that that they're safer wearing a mask, they should do that. I think that people that are in business should be given the option of requiring their customers to wear masks or not. Um, I have some concerns about the the government telling everyone they have to wear a mask. I think it's one of those things that sounds good in a textbook and may sound good when you put it on a piece of paper. But in the real world, it it creates additional problems. If you are, someone is particularly susceptible to an adverse consequence. As's Faras Cove, it is concerned on I think you are. You You clearly want to avoid getting into a situation where people may not be honoring the the recommendation to wear masks. But the just the idea of the government ordering everybody to put a mask on just seems to to me to t cut against the grain. You know, the lieutenant governor had a campaign event last night in irritable county, and he had more of 100 people there seated tend to a table. No masks. Have you seen that? You have ah comment on that? I was not there. I had heard he was having an event. I was told this morning that there was There were a number of people there. Uh, I'm fairly certain that they were all adults who, uh, who have the ability to make decisions. Now the concern would be that that event ends up being something that is is a point where the disease gets transmitted into a larger population. I think that is something that folks in the public health sphere would be concerned about. But But I think if you've got a concern about that event being a transmission point, you should have the same concern about some of the mass marches that seem to be okay. And some of our public officials have clearly participated in. I I just think there's a real problem with being consistent about all of these kinds of things. And I just don't understand the outrage on the part of some folks for an event such as the one lieutenant governor Forest had on not similar outrage on the part of other events that take place. It just seems to me that a lot of this stuff is being viewed not through a scientific lens, but through a political lens. And if you're in favor of one political party or one political view. You're gonna take one view of certain things and another view of others. I think people expect and deserve consistency as faras how these things were dealt with and on the bar exam I saw that your son, who is in a appeals court justice and running for the state Supreme Court this year he came out on Twitter and said that he would like to see the bar exam canceled this year. Uh, would you be in favor of that? I really haven't thought that much about it. I know that a number of states have made the decision Teoh to allow folks that have graduated from law schools within those particular states Teoh be licensed without having Teoh pass the bar exam out of their provisional licences. That would have to be made up later. But I do know that you know there some people who would have legitimate concerns about attending a mass event of that sort Onda taking a test with other people with no mask requirement on. And I I just like that You've got folks who have spent three years in law school, four years in undergraduate school on, and their ability to practise. The profession is dependent on attending this event. They may have legitimate health reasons for not doing that. So I think it certainly would make sense to consider allowing for some sort provisional licensing for individuals under certain circumstance. Parents and her appreciate your time. I'm meteorologist K Campbell in the wr a severe weather center. It's been a warm spring so far. In fact, when you look at the spring to date numbers, it's actually the second warmest on record at RDU running about 4.5 degrees above normal and for rainfall about an inch and a half below normal. And we really need some rain. You know, it's been a pretty dry April so far we've seen less than an inch inch of rain this month tomorrow. It's a nice dry day for us, but I, you know, at least it's gonna be a nice day, right? 72 in the Triangle, as well as Siler City in Wilson. 70 in Rocky Mount. 67 though in Roxboro and 67 for Roanoke Rapids, a little cooler to the north. 76 degrees in Fayetteville, 73 Goldsboro in Smithfield and 75 in Southern Pines. It is going to be a little bit cooler in the morning because cold front moved through 50 degrees for the low in the triangle, right around 7 a.m. by 10 a.m. We're in the upper fifties, lunchtime, mid sixties and then in the lower seventies during the afternoon, dinner time, temperatures dip back into the upper sixties. A cold front passed earlier this evening and behind it, we are going to be drying out but cooling down briefly. It's not a huge drop in temperatures, but we will see this dip in the jet stream delivering some cooler air. We start to see a reversal of the jet stream flow and that changes really on Sunday with a warming southwest wind at the surface and at the jet stream level, that's going to drive temperatures up to 80 beginning on Sunday and the eighties will last into next week with a strengthening ridge of high pressure. So we expect a big climb in temperatures just throughout the course of the weekend, 48 degrees Friday morning, but back up to 80 by Sunday afternoon and then much warmer weather is on the way for next week. We're looking at seventies for the next few days with mostly cloudy skies for the weekend days. The sun's back out though next Monday and with a warming wind, we're back in the upper eighties three days in a row all the way up to 89 on Tuesday. Tuesday might be the 1st 90 degree day of the year for parts of North Carolina.

Seen some activity just in the past 10 minutes or so. I want to take you outside Sky five right now for a live look at the scene. We saw a van being escorted to the runway there and someone got out and now there appears to be a really careful inspection of the debris going on. So we're working to confirm if that may be the NTSB investigation team arriving at the scene. Let's zoom out and give you some about where this is. There are two main runways at RDU International and this is in the grassy field next to the runway that mostly serves terminal one on the east side of the airport, that runway remains closed while this investigation continues at the top of your screen. That is the other main runway that serves terminal two, mostly that runway is open. So we have two things going on here that could affect your flights for the rest of the day and maybe even into tomorrow, the airport takeoff and landing capacity is roughly reduced by half because they are only working with one runway. And if you have a flight coming out of terminal one, maybe Southwest, you're going to have to take that crossover all the way out to that other runway. It's going to add a lot of extra time.

A UNC Health physician and pilot were taken to the hospital Wednesday after a small plane crashed at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU).


Sky 5 flies over plane crash at RDU

RDU Airport Authority gives an update on a plane crash that sent a physician and pilot to the hospital. The crash occurred Wednesday morning on a flight that took off from Wilmington.

<p>Landguth first, I want to extend my thoughts to those affected by this morning's aircraft accident and thank our first responders for their quick action to respond. The airport authority and its mutual aid partners responded to an aircraft accident at RDU involving a general aviation aircraft. The accident occurred at approximately 10:10 a.m. in the grass next to runway five, right 23 left. The flight was arriving from Wilmington, North Carolina. The A the aircraft is owned by medical Air Inc and operated by UN C air operations. The aircraft had two people on board, one pilot and one passenger. Both were transported to area hospitals. The federal A Bush administration issued a ground stop that was lifted at approximately 1130 this morning. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have both been notified. The National Transportation Safety Board is en route and expected to arrive within the next hour at which time we will conduct an accident investigation. Rdu's runway five left 23 right reopened to departing and arriving aircraft around 11:30 a.m. this morning. Are you experiencing approximately 70 delays and several arriving flights were diverted to other airports? Until ground stock was lifted, travelers should contact their airline for the latest updates regarding the flight status. And of course questions about the identity and condition of the pilot and passenger should be directed to UN C health. And at this time I'll try to answer any questions. You may have, uh, the one, any other accidents in, in the past. I'm not familiar with any other accidents have occurred with that operation. I don't know, uh, that's the role of the National Transportation Safety Board. They'll actually come in and do the investigation. Uh, and at some point in the future, they write up a report and determine what the cause of the accident was. You know, that there was no notification to the airport authority or to the FAA uh about any type of emergency on board. Do we have a guy? We don't, all we know that we've got them out of the airplane and we've got them transported to local hospitals. We know situations like this and delays have a ripple effect on, you know, flights. Do you have any idea what type of impact we'll see here in our view and for not sure, but what we're going to encourage everybody to do is reach out to your airlines. We'll be able to give you real time information about the impact of your particular flight. Ok. I believe some of them went to Greensboro and I think a couple went to Charlotte as well. What, what to be impacted due to the NTSD. Say that one more time at this point in time, what we call the west side of our airport is now open the investigation they'll conduct will all be on the east side. So at this point, we are anticipating normal operations returning to normal operations from this point forward. I don't think that anything that they're doing regarding the investigation or where they would have to investigate would have any impact to the west side of the airport. No, the aircraft is still on the airfield itself. It's on the east side of the field. So terminal one that runways the east side of the field, that's where the debris field actually sits, the west side of the field is open and operational and safe to operate. Not that I'm aware of in operations for you throughout this event today. What was your main concern concerning the passengers that were in the internals? Right. I think our primary focus when, when that accident occurred were the two people sitting in that aircraft? Our primary mission is to make sure we can get to them and try to rescue them and try to make sure that we can get them in a safe condition as fast as we possibly can. Uh secondarily is trying to figure out then how we recover and get our operations back up and running. Mhm. How does that affect? What goes on term? Yeah, so great. Question. So the team has figured out a way to get all the aircraft they're gonna operate at terminal one. Your Southwest develops. Uh We've got a crossover taxi way that we can actually get them through our general aviation aircraft. We've got a crossover taxiway, we can get them to. But the rest of the uh accident scene is actually kind of isolated and closed and locked off. Yeah, you're terminal one at this point in time. Once they can get back on their schedule, it's going to be a normal operations. All right. Thank you guys. All right. Thank you. Grab your phone, right.</p>
