North Carolina added 4,741 new cases of COVID-19 from April 3 to 9, according to data released Wednesday by the state.

North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services data shows a 44% increase from the 3,074 new cases added from March 27 – April 3.

The state is expected to release more information on Wednesday evening.

As of Wednesday, the world surpassed half a billion known coronavirus cases.
It comes after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Wednesday it would extend the nationwide mask requirement for airplanes and public transit until May 3. The mandate had been set to expire on April 18.
