CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A nonprofit organization is launching Experience Downtown Chapel Hill, or XDCH, a project meant to help local businesses recover from COVID-19.

Founded by The Downtown Chapel Hill Partnership, the campaign will raise money to support businesses and encourage people to enjoy downtown Chapel Hill this summer while maintaining safe social distancing.

XDCH will commission a custom mural in downtown Chapel Hill featuring pictures of people, places, moments or events that make up the area's history.

People can donate to XDCH to purchase a tile submit their photos to be part of the mural knowing all funds go to support downtown Chapel Hill. The location of the mural has not yet been announced.

“Chapel Hill is home to many beloved local businesses which have become institutions in our community,” said Matt Gladdek, Executive Director of the Downtown Partnership. “We look forward to highlighting these stories for years to come.”

Businesses in Chapel Hill and across the state were closed for more than two months, and most are still struggling despite restrictions being lifted.
