RALEIGH, N.C. — Classes on campus at Neuse Christian Academy in Raleigh are canceled until further notice after a student tested positive Sunday for the coronavirus.

A school spokeswoman said families and faculty were alerted to the case after the school learned of it Sunday evening.

The school will follow protocols outlined by the Wake County Health Department for quarantining, additional cleaning and reopening, the spokeswoman said.

Public schools in the county are set to begin Aug. 17, but with students learning remotely. Private schools like Neuse Christian have made their own back-to-school plans and have seen cases pop up among student populations as the academic year begins.

Across the country, as schools reopen and health officials try to understand the effects of the virus on children and the role young people play in its spread, the numbers of cases in children has soared. More than 97,000 children in the US tested positive for coronavirus in the last two weeks of July, according to a report published by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children's Hospital Association. In those two weeks, there was a 40% increase in child cases across the states and cities that were studied.

At least 86 children have died since May, according to the report.
