Neighbors frustrated after Raleigh youth center hosts large gathering
The Wilders Grove Youth Center in Raleigh admits things got out of control on Saturday, when there were more than 200 people in attendance.Posted — Updated
That’s in clear violation of the Governor’s order on mass gatherings. Now, the youth center says they are taking steps to make sure this never happens again.
The field is quiet now — with crews cleaning up after a concert on Saturday that was anything but quiet.
Neighbors say the music reverberated through their homes for 10 hours.
“They were down there until midnight," said Al Gaddy. "All we could hear is boom, boom, boom.”
Gaddy lives across the street from the Wilders Grove Youth Center on Willow Oak Road. On top of COVID concerns, with no social distancing and mask wearing, Gaddy says the parking situation became dangerous.
“It was ridiculous because when you have a little road like this with cars parked on both sides, firetrucks and ambulances can’t get up and down it," he said.
Wilders Grove Youth Center says the field was rented to a concert promoter for “919 Day."
The field is on private property, but it is not exempt from the Governor’s Order, which says gatherings can not exceed 50 people outdoors.
Football Commissioner William White admits he agreed to have 200 people at the field…writing in a statement: “In the approval, we were assured the appropriate guidelines and social distancing rules were going to be applied, but the crowd got to be a lot more than expected. I understand the neighbors’ frustrations. We did not anticipate that level of noise. We are going to make sure nothing like that will happen again at Wilders Grove.”
“I would rather them not have another concert.”
Multiple neighbors tell WRAL News that they called police on Saturday, who showed up to direct traffic. A police spokesperson said that the department was reviewing the matter.
The music is now silent and the virus could be spreading silently too.
