North Carolina reported 2,091 new cases of coronavirus on Thursday, the highest daily total so far this month.

Since March, the state has identified 161,851 cases of the novel coronavirus. While most people recover – through Monday, the state reported 136,630 recoveries – 958 people remain hospitalized for treatment of COVID-19 in North Carolina.

After dipping through early August, new cases of the coronavirus have been on the upswing for the past two weeks, with an average of 1,579 new cases per day.

North Carolina ranks 9th in the United States in terms of the raw number of cases and 17th in deaths from COVID-19. More than 2,600 people have died in the state.

More than 5.8 million cases have been identified nationwide since the start of the outbreak in March, with more than 2 million confirmed recoveries.

The rate of deaths in North Carolina has been relatively steady, averaging 25 per day since the beginning of August.

The percentage of positive tests for the coronavirus is also on an upswing over the past two weeks, from a low of 5.6% positive on Aug. 17 back to about 8% positive on Aug. 26.
