RALEIGH, N.C. — The reported number of COVID-19 cases in North Carolina ticked up 5% in the week ending July 2, 2022.

While the reported case total – 24,613 – is well below where it was in January, when cases peaked during the omicron variant outbreak, the overall number is less reliable. As cases drop and vaccinations rise, fewer people are testing and even fewer are reporting their test results to the state.

In the first week of July a year ago, the state reported just 4,500 cases as vaccinations became widespread and the delta variant had yet to take hold.

In the first summer of the pandemic, before vaccines were developed, the state averaged about 11,000 cases per week, or half of the current reported numbers.

North Carolina wastewater testing shows the number of COVID-19 particles detected in the state's wastewater increased slightly week-to-week, by around 4%, this week.

Seventeen people were added to North Carolina's COVID death toll in the past week, bringing that total since March 2020 to 25,257.
