RALEIGH, N.C. — The 2020 graduating class ended their college experience without the experience they expected.

The pandemic canceled traditional in-person graduation ceremonies.

But some of last year's graduates returned this Saturday – to do it the right way.

Hannah Williams, a Meredith graduate, has already gotten a job and moved on with life after college.

Her job is part of the fight against COVID-19, at a job that helps distribute vaccines.

Now she is taking back what the virus stole from her. At her graduation, they call her name, and she takes her place on stage in a cap and gown for a proper sendoff.

She was in the graduating class of 2020 at Meredith College, but the pandemic canceled her in-person graduation ceremony last year.

A chapter of life ended – but it was still hard to turn the page.

“It brings tears to my eyes," she said. "It has been a long year for everyone. So actually getting to do this now is something I am really grateful for.”

Masks and social distance in the crowd were a reminder of the pandemic, but at least these graduates were able to celebrate together.

Allison Barrow, the 2020 Class President, gave a speech to the crowd, saying the pandemic made their class stronger.

“It has made you a better employee, a better student, a better friend, person and community member," she said.

The graduation ceremony had a similar feel at Saint Augustine’s University.

The event was held outside, where 2020 graduates were included in the 2021 ceremonies.

“Welcome home to the class of 2020," said Dr. Christine Johnson McPhail, Saint Augustine’s University.

“We are especially pleased to have the members of the class of 2020," she said. "We know it was difficult last year, because you could not experience it in real time, but we are delighted you are here with us this morning.”

Congratulations again to the class of 2021 and 2020!
