RALEIGH, N.C. — In the state cases of the coronavirus, coronavirus-deaths and hospitalizations continue to rise -- but upward trends aren't scaring off crowds of people eager to enjoy nice weather at their favorite downtown hotspots.

Saturday night, Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin said she spoke to business owners about practicing social distancing standards after large crowds were seen this weekend at restaurants in Raleigh.

"Owners have put down tape and demonstrated responsibility. I have spoke with many of them. They understand what is expected," she said.

Baldwin also said she was shown video that crowds downtown were maintaining social distancing.

Dozens of people packed the sidewalks, waiting to get inside places like the BBQ Bar and Raleigh Beer Garden. All these people lined up at restaurants on Glenwood South means the return of money for cash-strapped businesses. Those crowds gathered with very few masks and limited social distancing.

"It’s a good thing. Being in the house can be frustrating and stressful, so being out and able to walk the streets is really nice," said Angel Goldscon, who lives nearby.

While many still worry about the spread of COVID-19, others don’t seem as concerned.

Businesses do appear to be following the 50% capacity restrictions. Once they fill up inside, the lines start forming outside. Capacity restrictions drives the lines because it turns into a one-in-one-out situation.

Currently, customers are not mandated to wear a mask inside restaurants in Wake County.

Bars and nightclubs are still completely shutdown.
