FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Michel Bass knows the impact of COVID-19. She's picking up food from the Fayetteville Urban Ministry. She also needs help with her electricity bill.

"I'm so in need of lights being paid. I have an old bill with Public Works Commission where I have family members and different ones that's over $1,100," said Bass, a Fayetteville resident.

Paying bills

The city is stepping up to help. It's offering one-time assistance of up to $2,000 for mortgages, rent and utilities or other emergency expenses related to COVID-19.

"There is always a constant need in this community, but COVID has really elevated that in a new way. People are out of work now. People's hours have been cut. It's effecting the way that they pay their bills if they're able to pay their bills," said Patricia Jackson of the Fayetteville Urban Ministry.

Haley Greene knows that better than just about anyone. She helps clients here at the Urban Ministry apply for money from the COVID Relief program set up by the city.

Greene said, "It's rolling, it's definitely rolling. We have a lot of calls coming in especially with the grant being put out letting people know we have money. I feel like a lot of people are in desperation."

Fayetteville received about $900,000 through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act -- better known as the CARES Act.

Mayor Mitch Colvin says there are two good reasons for residents to apply now.

"The governor's order will expire pretty soon for utility payments, rental evictions and mortgage foreclosures have been delayed because of, but that is coming to and end in the coming months and we want to be prepared to make sure our residents have the help they need," said Colvin.
