Fayetteville mayor resists recommendation to lift nighttime curfew

In a recent email, Councilman Johnny Dawkins asked the mayor to rescind the curfew, saying it is not accomplishing anything other than placing unnecessary stress on residents who have to drive after 9 p.m, when the curfew kicks in, like those people working late shifts.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville Mayor Mitch Colvin will not consider rescinding his nighttime coronavirus curfew until at least the end of the month when it is scheduled to expire, Colvin said at a Fayetteville City Council meeting Monday night.

“As you know, the governor’s order (shutting down businesses) will be active through the end of the month, so we’ll seek guidance whether they renew it,” Colvin said in a special-called council meeting.

In a recent email, Councilman Johnny Dawkins asked the mayor to rescind the curfew, saying it is not accomplishing anything other than placing unnecessary stress on residents who have to drive after 9 p.m, when the curfew kicks in, like those people working late shifts.

Dawkins, the only Republican on the council, said it is only his recommendation to rescind the curfew.

“It is the mayor’s decision,” he said. “I have found that lawbreakers don’t worry about laws. It’s the rest of us law-abiding citizens that get this extra layer of stress upon us because of this curfew.”
