FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville Christian School has switched to virtual learning after a COVID-19 cluster involving 10 people.

"Every year during the first few weeks of school there is an uptick in student illnesses, so this uptick in cases after being in school two weeks is not uncommon," said Tammi Peters, Head of School. "However, because the symptoms of other viruses overlap with symptoms of COVID, students who are exposed must also be quarantined."

Masks are currently optional at the school.

According to Peters, the confirmed COVID-19 cases, which impact multiple grade levels at the K-12 school, have forced many other students and staff to stay home as required by exposure protocol.

Since the school only has a combined staff-student population of 720, officials made the decision to move to virtual learning.

Peters said she hopes the school can resume normal activities on Sept. 7.

In a child care or school setting, a COVID-19 cluster is defined as a minimum of five confirmed diagnostic cases, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services.
