DURHAM, N.C. — Cuban restaurant COPA is celebrating its second anniversary in the Bull City, while trying to navigate an uncertain future due to the coronavirus pandemic. "All we’re trying to do right now is get enough business to pay people” owner Elizabeth Turnbull said Tuesday.

Turnbull isn't alone. Hundreds of restaurants and thousands of workers are scrambling to stay afloat amid the virus, which prompted Gov. Roy Cooper to suspend in-restaurant dining in the state.

COPA has turned to take-out, curbside pick-up and delivery to try to keep as many employees on the payroll as possible.

"I can work with my banks. I can work with my lenders. I can figure out how to pay off debt but what matters is that my team members who have trusted me to provide them a living wage and a livelihood- that I can help with that responsibility,” Turnbull said.

At Pie Pushers, co-owner Mike Hecker is worried about the employees he can't afford to employ right now as the pizza restaurant focuses on take-out and delivery. The restaurant is providing employees meals, if needed.

“Our busiest night was Friday and that’s true anyway so we see the same trends in general but everything is different right now,” Hecker said.

To help with curbside pick-up, the City of Durham has even provided metered parking spaces on the street for customers.

“We just need folk to order," Turnbull said.

For many restaurant owners there are tough decisions being made. In downtown Raleigh, James Beard Award-winning chef Ashley Christensen announced Tuesday that all of her restaurants would be closed for the foreseeable future.

Brewery Bhavana and MOFU Shoppe, also in downtown Raleigh, and Nana's in Durham are among the restaurants that have opted forgo or stop take-out services altogether.
