I am talking today to Dr Charlene Wong. She's a assistant professor of pediatrics and public policy at Duke University. Thank you for joining us, Dr Wang. Thanks so much for having me. So you were speaking the other day at an event that I was that you were talking a lot about why it's important for some kids to get back into the school, said. And physically, can you talk a little bit about that? Yeah, there decades of evidence about the benefits of Children going to school in person Number one, of course schools a replace that educate Children. And we know that Children tend to learn better in person. This is certainly the case for our younger Children are elementary school students for whom learning through a computer is really challenging even more so than for our middle or high school students. We also know that there are some students who really need a little bit of extra help with learning. Those who have individualized education plans have special learning needs, and providing that via the computer is hard. And we've seen just such staggering disparities in the losses for education of the Covitz slide already just from the spring closures of school, right and various researchers have tracked that that is very pronounced socio economically. Kids who come from less wealthy family, you seem to be having a harder time keeping up online than kids from more wealthy families. Is that is that accurate? It certainly is. You know, in order to do remote learning, you need to have really good broadband, and you need to have a device that you can do remote learning on. I have teen patients that I see whose main sort Maine, a place where they access the Internet, is on their phones, and many times they show them to me, their screens air completely cracked. It's enough to do instagram or text, but it's certainly not sufficient for doing online score. In addition, we also know those I'm saying. Vulnerable families often relied a Kitchel lie on schools for nutrition for a safe place to be during the day, and their parents rely on that child care source so they could go to work, right? And I get my ass about that specifically because I have a lot of friends, your appearance and they say this is just a child your nightmare is one week on two weeks off scheduled it. Some schools are doing. What is it gonna take to make that work? Do we need a government program for that? Or employer programs or community programs to help parents with? Yeah. I mean, I think this is something that everyone is trying to figure out right now. It will be interesting. We're basically having a lot of testing of different strategies, you know, a few days a week, weeks on and off, like you said. And one really important thing is that we monitor how each of these strategies is working for these different school districts in the families both to see. Are there any strategies that seem to help prevent infections? More but importantly, also what's working for families so that they could both fulfill their personal and the professional obligations? You know, one thing that has already spun up, I think, all over the state all over the country, or communities coming together to try to help each other out support each other, as all parents, particularly working parents are trying to figure out. How am I going to arrange childcare in this new unknown world? of schools being open only a few days and also anticipating that there well, almost for sure be schools that need to re close, perhaps even across the entire state. But certainly in localities, as we see infections start going up more quickly in some localities. Now, it was asking you what it is that What do parents need to know we need to expect as we send our kids back into this new way of doing school? Yeah, Parents need to know that of course, school is gonna look very different on. And it's also gonna look for parents of kids in elementary school versus middle and high school just because again, what's developmentally appropriate for kindergartner versus a middle schooler versus a high schooler to both understand and actually do during the day, It's gonna look different. And what parents could be doing now is talking to their kids about some of those changes that are coming and really starting now is early in advance as possible so that kids have the most time to process and digest what they should expect when they return to school. You were just talking about the timing of in person versus remote learning. You talk about that a little bit, Yeah. You know, I think we've need to follow the data. We need to follow the evidence when this making the decisions around whether schools should be open in person or on Lee offering remote learning and each locality to district should be making that decision because we see so much variability across the state. That being said, I believe, if there's an opportunity for in person learning to try to get that done early in the school year, different than last year when students already knew their teachers, they had met their classmates and then they switched to remote learning. This year, they're going to be moving into new cohorts with new teachers and particularly again for our younger Children, for whom making that social connection get a computer is just to get developmentally probably not gonna work as well, having the opportunity to meet their teacher in person to meet some of those classmates in person. Knowing that we will likely have to transition to more remote learning because our numbers are continuing to go up and then on top of that, we're gonna hit our usual viral season where we see ready knows a beaver's all the time, and it won't necessarily be Corona virus. But any Children with those symptoms also won't be able to go to school. So really, as much as we're able to allow even a few weeks of that in person introduction prettily for our younger Children so they get to meet these teachers and students, and then, if they need to transition to remote learning, it will facilitate more effective rote learning. In my opinion, for younger Children, talk a little bit about masks in schools. You know, we've We've heard from some parents that they say, Well, if my child under 11 doesn't need to wear a mask out in public when we go to the store, why did they need to wear a mask in in the school setting? You know how How is that different? Can you explain? Yeah, E think the answer is we're not 100% sure, which is why we're seeing across the country, different states, different school district's take different approaches to masks, particularly for elementary school. Just because we're actually not sure how much they will help. And certainly there gonna be a lot of challenges encouraging and enforcing mask wearing all day and are younger Children. The difference, you know, with going to school versus being in a store is, of course, your around a lot more kids in close contact for a lot longer period of time than when you're in a store. Typically, um, and so I think the recommendation. Teoh try to have Children wear masks, including an elementary school. It is valid based on the science we're seeing, because the science is showing that mass definitely make a difference, but it will be a challenge. There is no doubt, certainly for parents trying to encourage their child to wear masks and even more so, I think we really need to think very carefully about what we're asking. School staff teachers and the other staff were in the schools to dio, um, again, I I think one of the most important things that we his parents in the community can do is to model for Children. That mask wearing is the norm. This is what is helping save lives. It is protecting you, your friends, your family, your loved ones. Um, because if you can imagine a child who goes to school who sees their family or their neighbors or their continued never wearing masks. And then there's this teacher who's asking them to wear a mask for 664 plus hours a day. It's gonna be very confusing to them. You could imagine trying to understand. Why is it that I need to do a singing that you know, it's physically not that comfortable? Right? And you also have talked a little bit about unexpected quarantines and how it's families need to plan for those. Can you talk a little about that? Yeah, we're certainly, I think people are becoming more aware of the fact that as we're seeing increased exposure to people who have been diagnosed with Kobe 19 the recommendation, if you've been in close contact, is to quarantine at home for 14 days, meaning trying to stay away from others because you've been exposed to Kobe 19. That is also the recommendation for Children in schools and in day care centers. So if a classmate in your child's class is diagnosed with Kobe 19 right now, the recommendation is that big quarantine for 14 days now, how that will change as potentially everyone is wearing masks. We're learning something new about Corona virus every single day. But for right now, that's the recommendation. And importantly, right now there is no covert tests, meaning you can't get your child tested for Cove it and show that it's negative for them to come back earlier than that 14 day quarantine to school. So my yeah, the reason for that is that what we know about Corona virus is that it can spread even when you don't have symptoms. And this is probably even more true for Children, though again we need more data, Um, because Children tend to have less symptoms to and no symptoms compared to adults. But corner virus can spread even before you have symptoms, and most people who develop symptoms 99% of them will develop symptoms by that 14 day mark. In addition, we also know that you can have Corona virus even if you have a negative test, because in order for most the test that we have available to detective, it has to be enough from the virus in your body in order for the test of detected. And as you all know, there's lots of different types of tests, ones that go in the nose of swab in the mouth. Each of those on performs a little bit differently. But because we know that 14 day period that you can still be spreading the infection before you have symptoms even before your test turns positive, that's the reason for the 14 day quarantine what computers do to get ready for that. I mean, it's not like you're gonna be able to take your child to child care for that time, right? If you need to go to work, that's correct. You know, right now, parents can try to think about what their backup plans will be. You know their plans. A, B and C difference in the governor's school plans regarding who is available in the household, who would presumably have also already been exposed to the child. You know, if there are two partners, is there an extended family member or a friend roommate who lives in the household and have those discussions now again? Not a lot of great solutions for a lot of families, I think also very importantly, talking with employers for working parents about what their employers are prepared to do to help with these noon disruptions that are coming our way as working parents. And you said we can expect these things to change as the year goes on. That's right. We've already seen it just in the last few weeks. Things have really changed dramatically even before our public schools are meant to open, which is in a month, things could change again, really dramatically. Um, and I think the most important point here is that we need to follow the data. We need to listen to the experts in the scientists so that we're making the decisions that best safeguard the health of our Children, of ourselves, of our of our loved ones and the community and that science is again. We're just learning something new so quickly in this pandemic on dso really listening to the experts who can put those pieces of data together and turned those into policies and recommendations to safeguard everyone. Keeping in mind also that we need to balance the health and the economic needs of our society, which is a very challenging position to be in. Hi, everyone. I'm meteorologist, Anthony Baglione. I hope you've had a great weekend. We are, of course, getting ready to head back in the swing of things for the upcoming week. Let's talk about all things, weather, of course, getting us prepared. We are on track to see some warmer temperatures headed this way. I called it sunglasses and shorts week and that really is kind of what it's going to be just depending on your comfort level. But for everyone, we're looking at temperatures in the eighties, close to, if not at 90 our normal high for this time of the year is about 76. Very little rain. Chances also to kind of help cool us down. We'll talk about our potential for that here in just a second tonight though. Mostly clear skies, temperatures in the upper fifties to near 60. It'll be a pretty comfortable start Monday morning. You will not need the heavy winter gear, the rain gear, maybe a light jacket, but otherwise looking pretty good. We go to about 85 tomorrow afternoon could hit some nineties into Tuesday, I think for the most part though, we're looking it up at upper eighties for the, just about everyone. A lot of sunshine tomorrow, we'll see just a mix of sun and clouds and the really nice thing too. With these warmer temperatures, sometimes you may think about humidity. How's it gonna feel? We're likely going to still be tolerable for the entire upcoming week. There may be a little bit of an adjustment there. Tuesday, Wednesday into Friday. Even where it may feel a touch more humid, but it is not going to be uncomfortable by any means, rain, chances are pretty minimal. It looks like on Tuesday, Tuesday night, even into Wednesday, we could see a few light showers, very minimal coverage. I think it's not going to amount to much. We could get some more though into next weekend, Saturday into Sunday. That looks like more scattered coverage, not wash out conditions. But I think that may be a better chance for some rainfall. 85 is where we go for our Monday. 88 on Tuesday, we dropped to 84 Wednesday back to 85 on Thursday. So kind of doing the up and down but eighties for the entire week and then next weekend again, scattered showers and storms. Both Saturday and Sunday, temperatures cooling off just a little bit still in the eighties morning, temperatures too in the upper fifties to near 60. So if you like the summertime warmth, that is what we're looking at here for the entire upcoming week. Otherwise, I hope you have a great start to the week. Uh But it's also calls to celebrate uh some really exciting news and the first uh such announcement this year in Pitt County across the state in North Carolina, we are uh already ahead of our pace from last year. Uh Having a wonderful year in terms of economic development. Today is a wonderful announcement of that. Since January across the state, we've announced uh 39 projects and this will be our 40th, more than 3600 jobs across North Carolina and over $2.5 billion in economic development investment statewide. And today's news uh is also great as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of Greenville, North Carolina. Over those 250 years, we've seen Greenville change and evolve and the evolution of Greenville as a community is parallel to what we've seen across the state from an economy once dependent on agriculture and tobacco. Pitt County and Greenville is transformed into an economy that's supported by medicine uh and advanced manufacturing and clean energy jobs like we're here to talk about today. Uh having grown up here and watch that evolution and watch Downtown and Dickinson Avenue evolve and having gone to school across the street at CMXS Middle School, it's especially gratifying to be back and to be working on wonderful announcements like this. Uh And today, it's also an incredible honor to introduce uh someone who I've had the great pleasure of working for in Raleigh for the past 7.5 years. Uh He's been working to build a stronger North Carolina uh where everyone has as an opportunity to live in safe communities, get a quality education, uh have good access to great jobs and great health care. Uh And where everybody has a chance to live lives of purpose and abundance. And today he'll share with the Greenville community some outstanding news. Let me just say, Chief Deputy Secretary of the Department of Commerce. And uh you might notice that I have a lot of people in my administration who are from Eastern North Carolina. It's because I grew up here and I know the kind of people that they are. So I am so happy to be here. With you today, seeing so many friends and familiar faces uh and to celebrate what's gonna happen today. Uh Thank you Marquita for being here, Representative reader. Thank you for, for, for being here. Thank you representative for you. Uh Thank you, appreciate all of you guys candy. Thank you for coming. Very grateful for you coming and being part of this. Um II, I wanna thank Mayor Pro TEM Daniels and say thank you very much for your hard work here. But it's great to join with you today with an outstanding announcement for the city of Greenville, Pitt County, eastern North Carolina and I am our entire state. I am so proud to announce that Bovi at Solar, an international renewable energy company has selected North Carolina for its first North American solar panel manufacturing facility that will create 900 jobs and invest $294 million right here in Greenville, North Carolina. Our economists predict that this project will lift North Carolina's economy by more than $2.9 billion over the next 12 years. This economic development. When shows us how teamwork, teamwork and that's a fitting word here in front of Dowdy Ficklin Stadium, teamwork and our amazing workforce. Keep bringing advanced manufacturing jobs to our state here in Pitt County. You have a great legacy of manufacturing, making everything from life saving pharmaceuticals to packaging personal care products and now comes important components for clean renewable energy. North Carolina is becoming an epicenter for clean energy that's putting money in the pockets of North Carolina families and small businesses. And as we've learned in North Carolina the last few years, a clean energy economy is a strong economy, providing American security. North Carolina is a leader in that 19 billion in capital investments and nearly 16,000 good paying manufacturing jobs created here since 2021 with the fourth largest producer of solar energy in the country. And with our bipartisan clean power plan that will get us producing zero emission clean energy by 2050. That means a lot more solar panels need to be made right here in North Carolina. This announcement means that they're going to be made right here. And North Carolina's emergence as a clean energy leader has fueled our growth and helped set us apart as the number one state to do business in the country for two years in a row, we all get to celebrate that recognition and much of the credit goes to our well trained, dedicated and diverse workforce, the people of North Carolina, they make up the best workforce in the country. And Bovi at solar is gonna find out about that. And our university Chancellor Rogers, thank you for hosting this today. Our university and community college systems including East Carolina Pitt community College and our research institutions and workforce partnerships help North Carolina stay first in talent coupled with our central east location, East coast location and includes easy access to transportation infrastructure by land, plain sea. And of course our excellent quality of life. North Carolina continues to be a top choice and we don't take opportunities and announcement like these for granted because we know that companies like Bovi at solar can choose to locate anywhere in the world, but they chose us. And that's why we must continue to increase our investments in education, workforce training in our public schools and in early childhood education, that is absolutely critical. This announcement is the result of strong collaboration by company executives, elected officials across both aisles and economic development professionals. In addition to Secretary Sanders and the Department of Commerce, I'd like to thank our Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina that works so well led by Chris Chung works so well with our Department of Commerce, our North Carolina General Assembly. Those members are here today, our Golden Leaf Foundation, our Greenville Eastern North Carolina Alliance, Pitt County Electric Cities, Greenville Utilities Commission and the city of Greenville. At this time, I would like to, to welcome to the podium, the CEO of Bovi at Solar, Jimmy Shea. And I'd like to present him with a gift on behalf of the people of North Carolina, Jimmy. If you could come forward, Jimmy, this is a piece of pottery made one of our, by one of our famous artists uh Ben Owen. And on it has the great seal of the state of North Carolina and it has a part of it. Thank you. Mm Let uh let me begin to say uh by saying, thank you to the press, our partners and everyone who took the time to join us at today's event. Uh We are around to be receiving this investment grade and uh we are excited uh for how it uh will enable us to get our first us solar panel manufacturer facility up to and running and uh created, created uh economic uh uh our opportunities for the pul air. Yeah, for those who uh who aren't familiar. Let me introduce the about the poet founded in 2013 poet, solar head office in Unite, unite us Germany and our group uh headquarters in Vietnam. We have a proven track record of successful working with many of the industrial leading players. And our PV module are known for their power performance. And quality. This is evident because Bo has uh maintained its uh pos uh position at a Bloomberg new energy financing T one solar module manufacturers. Since 2017, we have been written at the top performance on people's PV module reliability uh score card since 2019 BB. Successfully completed. And in the independent e estimate of bo uh uh water solar manufacturers facility in 2022 the US uh solar industrial had been in K for water solar since we first uh entered the uh in 20 17 as of 2020 f uh three world solar PV sales and the PV models manufacturing capacity is more than three gigawatts and it's a shar a total of more than 6.6 gigawatt since uh in fabric, manually operating in us. Marketing. We are dedicated uh to helping to build uh American solar manufacturers uh with our new facility and uh filing, you know, cutting power in uh petit county, North Carolina and the, the natural. Uh let me tell you more about our plan for the manufacture plant. First one of the project, we use the building to manufacture our solar modules per to will including contracting uh start uh start off the art 500,000 to 60 thou uh 100,000 square foot factory on 34 acres to manufacture of PV cells which are used to build the solar panels. The location is expected to output the two gigawatts of solar and the two gigawatt uh PV cells since the future, uh uh will help bring our top performance PV modules to our variable clients to foster stronger connections with the independent uh power products. EP CS product uh developers, solar in, in installs and the contractors. We will have product uh they need uh in increase the deve deployment of uh uh U utilities, commercial industrial and uh dangerous solar project. We will require a strong workforce to product pro produce these solar panels so we will hearing about uh 900 employees uh over the next five years, job are expect expected to increase engineers, product workers. And so on, on behalf of uh B solar, I would like to thank everyone in involved in making this uh weight of product uh possible.
