Duke nurse frustrated by questions of whether to wear masks or not
Ashley Wheeler, an emergency department nurse at Duke Regional Hospital, says she's seeing more and more coronavirus patients and wishes there wouldn't be a debate over wearing masks in public.
HAVE A GREAT >>> 871 CORONAVIRUS PATIENTS ARE IN THE HOSPITAL IN NORTH CAROLINA. ANOTHER RECORD DAY. IT HAS BEEN A RECORD-BREAKING WEEK. HERE IS OUR PERSPECTIVE FROM THE FRONT LINES. THIS IS WHAT YOU WILL ONLY SEE ON WRAL. >> IS IT LIKE TODAY THE NUMBER OF PATIENTS WITH COVID POSITIVE TEST IS MUCH HIGHER THAN IT HAS BEEN. AND SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN CREEPING UP. BUT THE NUMBER NOW IS MUCH MORE THAN THE AVERAGE OF WHAT WE HAVE BEEN SEEING THROUGHOUT. ANOTHER FACTOR SEEMS TO BE THAT NOW THE PEOPLE THAT WE ARE SEEING ARE OFTEN PEOPLE OUT IN THE COMMUNITY. IT IS WERE COMMUNITY EXPOSURE. IN THE EARLY DAYS IT WAS REPORTED THAT THE POSITIVE CASES CAME FROM NURSING HOMES IN AREAS WHERE THE PATIENTS WHERE WERE LIVING REALLY CLOSE TOGETHER. AND IT WAS GOING THROUGH A RESIDENTIAL AREA. BUT NOW THERE IS STILL SOME OF THAT, BUT IT IS PEOPLE COMING IN , FAMILIES AND YOU KNOW, HEY MY MOM IS SICK. WE NEED TO GET TESTED. WERE MY ROOMMATE WAS SICK AND I GOT EXPOSED AT WORK. AND NOW IS WHEN IT STARTS TO GET REALLY REAL FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE. SO AGAIN, I AM FRUSTRATED THAT IT SEEMS TO BE CONTINUED CONVERSATION ABOUT WHETHER MASKS SHOULD BE WORN.
