CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. — Cumberland County Schools are reviewing the state's newest guidance on mask requirements for schools before determining the next steps for its students on the traditional calendar.

Meanwhile, year-round students in Cumberland County return to school on July 26. With the current state mask mandate still in effect, year-round students and staff will be required to wear face masks while at school until further notice.

Earlier this week, state officials announced they want to see masks remain in place at elementary and middle schools and for any unvaccinated high school students and staff.

"Understanding that our year-round students return to school on Monday, July 26, and that the current state mask mandate remains in effect at this time, year-round students and staff will be required to wear face masks while at school until further notice," a statement from the district noted.

Gov. Roy Cooper said he will let the mandate expire July 30, when the current state of emergency order ends. In place of the mandate, the state Department of Health and Human Services issued an updated toolkit Wednesday for schools to follow to limit the spread of coronavirus as more students return to class statewide in the coming weeks.

CCS will communicate any changes made to its protocols to families if necessary.
