Coronavirus latest hardship for McDougald Terrace residents
Residents of the McDougald Terrace public housing complex in Durham have faced one hardship after another in recent months.
Posted — Updated"It's a lot. Residents are about to lose their minds," Ashley Canady, president of the McDougald Terrace Resident Council, said Tuesday.
Families were already struggling with living out of hotel rooms long-term, but now, with schools closed as the state tries to limit the spread of the virus, they spend most of each day cooped up in a single room.
Canady said a bright spot used to be that volunteers would bring meals to the hotels, and the residents could gather together. With the emphasis on "social distancing" to curb the virus, that's no longer possible.
To make matters worse, many McDougald Terrace residents work in hospitality, which was already hard-hit by the outbreak and now must deal with a statewide prohibition against dine-in service at bars and restaurants.
"A lot of them are facing unemployment right now, so it’s a battle," Canady said.
"Our biggest thing right now is we’re trying to get our donations back up because we didn’t expect our families to still be in hotels," she said.
