RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said Thursday that he has tested negative for coronavirus.

Cooper was tested Tuesday after interacting with some protesters near the Executive Mansion last weekend.

"Gov. Cooper went out and talked with protesters briefly, and he is encouraging anyone who has been in a crowd to be tested," Cooper's press secretary Dory MacMillan said Monday.

Hundreds of free testing sites have been set up statewide, and health officials have relaxed guidelines in recent weeks to encourage as many people as possible to be tested.

North Carolina has recorded more than 39,000 coronavirus infections so far, and more than 1,100 people have died in the pandemic.
