Class of 2021 adapts graduation traditions to pandemic limits
From senior thesis presentations, to bar crawls, to the commencement ceremonies, it was all different. But for graduating seniors at Duke NC State and UNC-Chapel Hill, different doesn't mean bad. (Video by Payton Tysinger)
it's still sad whenever people ask you go to Duke and I'm like oh I did. My name is charmy and I'm now graduated from Duke University. I am a recent graduate of U. N. C. Odds of May. I'm a senior this year at N. C. State graduating in the fall the last few weeks of school as things started to loosen up and people had their vaccines have been really surreal this past month. I feel like there's been a bit of a blur with the pandemic and finals and just outside kind of opening up and graduating from you and see during the pandemic there's the start of a new chapter graduation was honestly beautiful. It was great. I made the personal decision to not go to the actual ceremony even with you know the covid restrictions of having the chairs apart and having to our masks. Those were so minor in light of the moment that we were all going through together. I didn't want to sit through a ceremony where I would just be like watching the screen because then I could just Watch the screen at home. We've got two guests. And so it was still amazing having my two parents there. But of course I would have loved to celebrate that with more of my family. Honestly, I was just really grateful that we got to have that graduation. Congratulations to the Great Class of 2021. I've been able to go to different graduation parties, celebrations. I definitely think it was a bigger celebration than the other senior classes got to get just because we had built that bond through this shared experience of Covid and we were just celebrating getting service while we are celebrating graduation. Were also kind of celebrating, attempting to go back to some type of normality, graduating in a pandemic. I think also just means that we went through different things that other graduating classes went through. We adapted and we made our own traditions. Um, and I think the senior class especially had sort of newfound sense of solidarity. I think the last four years honestly meant the world to me, it's definitely exciting to be graduated and sort of to move into this new step.
