The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is urging people in the Latino community to get tested ahead of holidays and celebrations.

The state went from seeing Latinos make up about 50 percent of COVID-19 cases to 28 percent now.

State leaders want to make sure that the number keeps going down – even moreso now that Thanksgiving is approaching.

Officials are asking members of the Hispanic community to find safer options for celebrating this year.

"This year we need to celebrate in a different way. Find other options. I know it’s not the same, being virtual with other people," said Pilar Rocha-Goldberg, of El Centro Hispano.

Rocha-Goldberg said these next few months are crucial for the health of the state.

"We’ve seen how hard the community was hit in previous months," said she. "Because winter is here and flu season is coming, we are more vulnerable now."

State leaders are recommending people avoid traveling this year.

But if you must travel, they said, make sure you get tested, wear a mask and wash your hands frequently.

Currently, North Carolina is allowing gatherings of no more than 10 people indoors and no more than 50 outdoors.

"If you really love your people and your family just follow the recommendations," said Rocha-Goldberg.

As for Black Friday – the state is asking that people avoid in-person shopping because of the large crowds and long lines.

Online shopping, they said, is by far the safest option.
