RALEIGH, N.C. — We all know first responders heroically face the risk of COVID-19. But what about the so-called last responders--those dealing directly with the deceased?

The CDC said there's a potential of virus spread even from a dead person.

This potential for COVID-19 spread from the diseased has created added challenges for funeral home workers.

Funeral homes are already navigating a difficult time with COVID-19 restrictions. At Lea's Funeral Home in Raleigh, visitors are greeted by hand sanitizer and state rules prohibiting mass gatherings, such as for funerals.

Behind the scenes, even more precautions are needed to protect morticians and embalmers from potential spread from COVID-19 positive bodies.

If the body "breathes" through their diaphragm, they can exhale the virus. It can also be passed through touch.

"We are trying to take extra precautionary steps," said Nathan Lea, General Manager for Lea's Funeral Home.

Safety videos from YouTube help guide funeral home workers through best practices in preparing the deceased for services, including wearing face shields to protect against droplets, or to thoroughly disinfect the mouth of the deceased.

"Once we get them back, we disinfect everything that we've had, disinfect the stretcher, disinfect the removal van," said Lea.

Like health workers, Lea says a big concern is finding enough personal protective equipment.

"We're worried about how long it will take before we can actually get more supplies," said Lea.

Funeral homes are used to dealing with traumatic times--but this time is further complicated by the pandemic.

"We're trying to keep ourselves safe, keep the community safe, and keep the families around safe as well," said Lea.

While spread is possible from direct handling of a COVID-19 positive body, health officials see no real risk for loved ones attending a funeral service.
