RALEIGH, N.C. — Calls to North Carolina Poison Control have spiked during the coronavirus pandemic.

Officials said the center received 454 calls in March 2019 and saw a 50 percent increase for a total of 682 calls in March of this year.

"Ingestion is what I’ve seen since I’ve been in this role and look at reports and data," said UNC Trauma Prevention Center Injury Prevention Coordinator Lindsay Bailey.

With more people using common household cleaning products like bleaches and disinfectant, exposures occur when the product hits their skin or gets in their eye.

Bailey said a lot of these incidents involve children. "When you think about a small child, that actually puts those products right at eye level and makes it easier for them to get a hold of them," she said.

NC Poison Control has a few suggest to safely use household cleaning products:

  • Use as directed, never swallow or inject
  • Store products away from children
  • Don't confuse surface wipes with personal care wipes

Officials expect to see the same increase in calls this month as they did last month.
