APEX, N.C. — As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, an Apex dance studio got creative as it sought to continue its dance and theater programs for kids and teens. It's taken them outside.

The Academy for the Performing Arts has built an outdoor classroom. The covered classroom is equipped with a dance floor and has enough space to hold a class for up to 25 people while social distancing. Industrial fans and heaters will help to moderate the temperature though participants are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather.

The space is hosting open air dance classes for preschoolers to grade schoolers. It also has a slate of theater classes for grade schoolers to high school students.

Elisa Morath with the studio said they're eager to spread the word about the open air classroom, "especially as so many of our kids are cooped up right now yet we all want them to get safe, healthy and fun physical activity."

The studio also is offering dance programs at limited capacity inside its studio, along with virtual princess birthday parties, among other activities. And teachers can sign up for free outdoor dance classes. More information is on its website.
