Amanda Lamb: Tired
Raise your hand if you're tired? Tired of COVID, tired of politics, tired of the hate we keep seeing volleyed back and forth on social media like a tired old tennis ball that has lost its bounce.
Posted — UpdatedAnd it’s kind of interesting because I’ve never gotten more sleep in my adult life since the pandemic erupted. I made big changes—no pre-dawn workouts, making sleep a priority for my health. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still as busy as ever at work and at home, tackling one cleaning-out project after another. This past weekend was the pull-down attic which is now basically empty.
Still, despite the change of pace, like you, I am weary. It’s a different kind of tired than I had when my life was on a treadmill and subject to the daily stress of running from one thing to the next. Now, it’s more of a weariness of the soul that comes from being worn down by so much negativity.
So, I started thinking about how this affects our children. My college daughter came home for a visit about two weeks ago. She too was tired—tired of going to school from her bedroom in her apartment, tired of trying to navigate a social life as a 20-something while being responsible, tired of the differing perspectives about COVID that often divide friends. She needed a break.
As we enter the last few weeks before the election and the winter months where outdoor activities won’t always be possible, I wonder just how weary everyone will get before we bounce back. After all, it’s not the kind of tired a nap can cure. I’m not sure what the cure is, but I’ll be sure to let you know when I find it.
