GREENSBORO, N.C. — Five thousand students are starting the school year online without Chromebooks, according to the superintendent of Guilford County Schools. The district is waiting for a shipment of nearly 80,000 chromebooks, WXII reports.

The district can't receive these devices due to a national backlog in technology for students.

Sharon Contreras, superintendent Guilford County Schools, is asking for community donations of cash or old devices to help out the 5,000 students left without the proper tools to start the new school year.

The supply of more than 79,000 Chromebooks could take until mid-November to come in.

At least for the first nine weeks of school, students in Guilford County will be learning remotely. The earliest students would return to GCS would be Oct. 20.

Contreras on her Twitter put out a call for the community to donate devices.

"Students have no access to a device and consequently to education while we await delivery to 60,000 plus devices amidst a national backlog," she said.
