RALEIGH, N.C. — The phone keeps ringing.

"We're getting a lot of calls, "are you open?" said Ken Guenther.

His Cary repair shop, Brakes Plus, is open.

"We do obviously breaks, all your maintenance services, down to rebuilding upper ends of engines, replacing transmissions."

"You need your car to get to where you're going," said Guenther. "I think it's absolutely essential."

Also in the category, auto dealerships, gas stations, towing companies, farm and construction equipment, boat repair even bicycle repair shops.

Most of those staying open adjusted the way they operate, to protect customers and themselves.

"We do all of our business transactions by phone," said Guenther. "Then we have a process of wiping the vehicle down and leaving the keys and receipts in the vehicle for pickup."

Leith Cars, which operates 24 dealerships covering more than 30 brands, says they sanitize cars brought in both before and after work is done. They also offer night drop-off, and no contact payment options for repairs.
"We're doing everything we can to do our part and flattening the curve," said Guenther.

He with the added precautions at his shop, owners who need repairs can feel safe getting them done.

"A lot of people are behind on their car maintenance often, and it's difficult to get into a shop ... you know, everyone works."

"This is a good time for people to get caught up," he said.
