DURHAM, N.C. — Spring is the busiest season for the wedding industry, and the coronavirus pandemic has already postponed many ceremonies.

Angela Bullard from Durham was ready to say "I do" to her fiancé, but everything changed before she got the chance.

"My venue on Saturday said, 'It’s happening, no worries,'" Bullard said. "But by the time Monday or Tuesday came around, it was like, 'Okay, maybe we shouldn’t.'"

Bullard got engaged to her boyfriend, Grant Lyke, in May. They began planning the April 18, 2020, wedding in August and secured their vendors early.

"I found everyone super early on," Bullard said. "I’ve had everyone booked since probably October or November of last year."

Bullard said her florist, Amy Wurster from Poppy Belle Design, and her day-of coordinator have helped her reschedule everything from her venue to catering.

"I agree wholeheartedly that it was better to postpone in this situation," said Wurster.

The couple rescheduled their wedding for a new date in June, hoping social distancing won't force them to cancel again.

Poppy Belle Design is offering all of its clients an opportunity to reschedule their orders with no penalty fees while still working hard to lessen the impact on their small business revenues, Wurster said.

Rocky Top Catering is another of one of many companies and venues dealing with the disaster created by COVID-19.

"It is absolutely just a nightmare," Dean Ogan, the owner of Rocky Top, told WRAL on Wednesday. Ogan said, this time of year, he handles roughly 60 weddings a month. Now he has none.
